Historical Significance:
On October 11, 1989, Major Adel Bassem saw his opportunity to defect while on a training flight along the Golan Heights. Taking the bold chance, he broke away from his Syrian formation and, with afterburners engaged, crossed the border into Israel, landing undetected at Megiddo Airport. The defection was a significant intelligence opportunity and somewhat embarrassing for Israel due to the lack of detection until after landing. The MiG-23ML was a prized intelligence acquisition for the IDF/AF.
