Historical Significance:
VF-31, initially designated as VF-3A in 1948, has flown various aircraft, from the F6F Hellcat to the F-14 Tomcat, which it first deployed in 1981. In 2005, VF-31 deployed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt for its last cruise with the F-14, participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this mission, VF-31 became the final squadron to drop a bomb in combat with the F-14. The squadron returned home in 2006, transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet and being redesignated as Strike Fighter Squadron 31 (VFA-31).
