The Irix Edge Vari ND is half the size of most filters available on the market. The thinner frame prevents vignetting problems even on wide-angle lenses or when combining additional filters. What are Vari ND filters? The Vari ND filter is made of two polarizing filters. When the polarizers rotate relative to each other, a larger amount of incoming light is cut off. This eliminates the need to carry several ND filters. It is enough to use just one Vari ND filter and adjust it according to your needs. Vari ND Filters in Filmmaking The basic principle of achieving the so-called "cinematic look" is to use a shutter speed that is twice as long as the number of frames per second. If we are filming at 30 frames per second, to achieve perfect motion blur and smoothness without any filter, the only option is to close the aperture, thereby losing shallow depth of field. Using an ND filter allows you to cut off some of the light reaching the matrix, maintaining the appropriate shutter speed and the desired aperture. The Vari ND filter also allows you to change the density, eliminating the need to carry several filters. 2-5 stops of aperture Many filters on the market allow for almost complete cutting off of light. In theory, this is an advantage, but in practice it turns out to be very problematic. Due to the construction of other variable density ND filters, the more light is cut off by rotating the filter, the more sharpness and color are lost. In Irix Vari ND filters, thanks to the use of exceptional quality optical glass, the negative effects are minimized. Using variable density ND filters allows you to adapt to the existing lighting conditions and set the appropriate aperture. When we do not know by how many stops it will be closed by the ND filter in use, the markings on the Vari ND filters will come to our aid. They show us the exact number of stops of aperture (2-5) that should be closed with a specific filter arrangement.
